Cheotsu a chess opening dictionary

한국어

Chess has names for its very first moves. This site groups those names and their move orders into families, and every page draws the board move by move from the first one.

You do not need to know the name. Pick a family and the boards show you where it branches. If you have just started, begin with the page that holds only the first five moves.

141 families, 3810 lines. Collected on 2026-09-07 and served exactly as received, with no outside call at run time.

Sicilian Defense (시칠리아 방어)

1. e4 c5

A capital letter names the piece. K is king, Q is queen, R is rook, B is bishop, N is knight. No letter means a pawn. An x marks a capture, O-O is castling short and O-O-O is castling long.

Opening of the day

One line chosen by the date. You can play it out from the first move on the board below.

0 lines marked as played in this browser.

Lines you finish are written in this browser only. Nothing goes to the server.

Quiz of the day

Five questions: name the family from the board and play the opening move. Everyone gets the same set today.

New to chess

Only the lines that finish inside five moves. Each opening move gets its own board.

Browse by family

Largest families first. The number in brackets is how many lines that family holds.

Browse by ECO code

ECO is the classification code given to openings. It runs across five volumes, A to E, with one hundred codes in each.

Why there are no win rates here

This site does not say how often an opening wins or how often it is played. There is no open source for those numbers right now.

The opening statistics endpoint we checked on the founding day answered with an authentication refusal, so that axis was never built.

A guessed number on screen stops being data and becomes something we made up. Saying that we do not have it is the honest option.

What this site does not do

It does not say which opening is good. It shows names, move orders and classification codes as they are, with no evaluation and no recommendation.

It does not reproduce encyclopedia prose. What it uses is the classification letters and the moves.

There is no account and no sign in. Nothing you click here is stored against you.
